How To Reduce Holiday Shopping Stress
By Elizabeth Scott, M.S., About.com
While most of us really enjoy the holiday season, it can bring significant amounts of stress. Let’s face it: between the holiday parties, the baking, the holiday cards (complete with pictures and newsy letters) and finding the perfect gifts for everyone, we place pretty heavy demands on ourselves. This year, you can make it a point to enjoy the holidays more by simplifying some of the work, while maintaining what makes the holidays special: the love. Here's How:
- Know Your Budget
Much of the stress of the holiday season comes from feeling pressured to buy bigger and better gifts for those we love, even if this puts us in debt! While we may feel compelled to show how much we love people by showing how much we can spend, our loved ones would probably feel terrible if they knew we put ourselves in debt on their behalf. This year, determine what you can comfortably spend, make a budget, and stick with it. ‘Thoughtful’ doesn’t have to mean ‘expensive’. - Make A List
List all the people you’d like to buy gifts for, and divide your budget among them in whatever way makes sense to you. Then, next to their names, list what you’d like to get each person. You can use this as a checklist, so you’ll know who you’ve bought gifts for and who still needs a gift, and you’ll be less likely to spend too much on impulse buys, or accidentally buying more than one gift for the same person. - Be Efficient
Try to go to only a few stores. You can look down your list of items and see how many things you can find at the same store, and try to get all of your shopping done at one mall. If you can consolidate all of your shopping into one or two trips, that’s even better. While it’s fun to take long, leisurely days shopping and getting what strikes your fancy, this can add stress to holiday shopping, when you have so many purchases to make in such a limited amount of time. It’s simpler to enjoy the shopping while you’re doing it, get it out of the way, and enjoy doing other things once you’re done. - The Earlier, The Better
People sometimes postpone holiday shopping until the last minute. Don’t. If you shop earlier, you’ll have a better selection of gift ideas to choose from, you won’t get stuck in the last-minute rush at the malls and the post office, and you’ll be able to enjoy being done with your holiday responsibilities so you can just enjoy the season. Earlier is also better when you’re talking about what time of day to shop; shopping in the morning, if at all possible, tends to be a good way to avoid crowds, find displays in better order, and enjoy a less stressed atmosphere. - Consider Shopping Online
While there are some things many people aren’t comfortable buying online, there are many terrific holiday gifts to be found at your computer. Online shopping is a fast, simple, and efficient way to get the bulk of your shopping done at once. In addition to saving you the fights over parking spaces and the long waits in lines, in many cases you can have your gifts wrapped and delivered directly to your recipients, saving yourself the trouble of wrapping and the visit to the post office!
Tips:
- Buy duplicates. If you find a great gift at a great price, consider getting one for several people on your list, if it fits their tastes. This is a great way to save time and money.
- Include gift receipts. Ask for gift receipts at the register, and include them with your gifts when you wrap them. That way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that if what you got doesn’t work for your recipient, they can easily exchange it.
- Get gift cards. If you really need things to be simple, gift cards and certificates are a great option. You can find gift cards for everything from movies to dinners to massages now, and they’re quick to buy and easy to send. They still offer sweet sentiments to your loved ones, buy make the shopping much simpler for you.
- Let the post office be your friend. Rather than lugging all of your gifts to the post office and standing in the long lines, you can now get them to come to you! Visit theUSPS website to find out how easy it is to get a postal carrier to come to your door, pick up your packages, and deliver them for you.
Shop, Shop, Shop (Melanie)
UGH!
Now..I can't complain. I enjoy giving more than receiving..I do, but you have to admit it is HARD. I have 27 people left to buy for. Now granted..all those gifts aren't 100's of dollars worth of ideas..some are gifts of 10 dollars or under, but STILL!
I'm such a perfectionist when it comes to finding that perfect gift for someone and as I get older (and the receivers do too) it becomes harder.
I guess I am complaining huh?
But..feel me ladies..how many of your men shop for the family gifts? It is usually our jobs. It really becomes a JOB this time of year.
I try to start in October, so I can enjoy the holidays with my hubby and daughter and not be riddled with the fact I have to buy gifts each and every weekend.
We all seem to forget the real reason of Christmas and it becomes a "retail frenzy."
As I type this..I'm stressing over the fact of what those 27 people would LOVE.
I just know that I will enjoy all the family, friends, food and laughter that comes with it. So, I'll stop complaining now!
Happy Holidays!!

American Cancer Society (Melanie)
I just got back from the 27th Annual American Cancer Society Holiday Fashion Fare at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southpointe.
I was honored to be this year's emcee. It was an amazing event and it drew a crowd of 660 people. A lot of people support and donate to the ACS. It is all for such a wonderful cause.
A lot of people might not be aware that Buckhead, Bubba and myself do a lot of these events (not for pay..and we don't want paid anyway) on the weekends on our own.
I know I love to do it and it makes me feel better to help such great causes around the area. We also get to meet so many amazing people.
So, if you are ever out and about at one of these events on the weekends, make sure you come up to me and introduce yourself!

Whos Ready for Christmas (BuckHead)
I sure am ready for Christmas. NO! Not for the reasons that drive humble, loving, caring, non-consumer types mad. I am ready for warm fires, bright lights and music that reminds you of a place where the economy didn't suck. I know I know; Thanksgiving Day first. Ok. Here is what I'm think full for. Christmas is almost here. I'm going to spike your eggnog!

Jeff Reed (Melanie)
I know we are all bummed after that Steelers loss last night.
But, as true Pittsburghers..we will move on and not dwell right?
Um...maybe.
We have better things to think about this week here at B94. It is all about Jeff Reed again! There is a link right on our homepage and at Buckhead and Bubba's homepage to get you straight to NFL.com to vote Jeff Reed into the Pro Bowl! He surely deserves it.
Vote daily and as many times as you can!
Let's get Jeff that honor he has deserved for such a long time now!

B94 Halloween Party (Melanie)
These pictures are too priceless not to post.
Some of them are of Buckhead and Bubba and myself....some are of Beaker and our whole staff....some are of our WTAE friends who joined us..(see if you can point out Demetrius Ivory, Marcie Cipriani, Michelle Wright and Kelly Frey).
I wish I could tag them all with explanations, but I can't. The night was so much fun at McFadden's on the North Shore. Thanks to everyone who joined us!
p.s. These are the EDITED versions of the pics...as the night progressed the pics began to get a little PG-13. HA!
Should we have a Thanksgiving Party? I say...YES!!

The Harmony Inn (Melanie)
Okay..so I'm freaking out. I love scary movies, Haunted Houses, scary stories, wives tales on scary events...etc.etc.etc.
But, what Buckhead, Bubba and I are about to do Thursday night on Hell's Night is scaring me to no end. I don't know about being in a restaurant that has a history of having haunted happenings for years.
It is freaking me out that I have NO trust in Bubba whatsoever either. I think he will try to scare me more and his idea of trying to "conjure" up the devil and evil spirits is starting to take its toll on my nerves. I believe is getting annoyed too.
We have some great listeners coming with us..along with intern Beaker, our head of security Dominic and special listeners Suzanne the psychic and Doreen from the Paranormal society.
I hope that we have a safe night...peaceful..with only minimal scary happenings.
I don't know if I'm going to last the whole night.
Make sure you tune in Friday morning..Halloween morning to listen to our special broadcast about our night at Hampton Inn in Hampton.
Wish us luck and blessings!

LIVE WITH THE B (Melanie)
Although, the fighting has begun. Bubba, Buckhead and I are trying to WIN. We don't want Coop, Kobe or Flick to win. We are all trying to start our strategies and our alliances.
My partner is named Angela Haag. She is awesome. She lives in Greensburg and is the mother of FOUR adorable boys. She is 24 years old and married and really wants to win!!
I hope you all can keep us in the house so we can show up all the men I'm up against.
Visit our website daily starting October 13th for all the live webcams.
We are thanking Comcast, Heartland Homes, Shop N Save, B94 and West Penn Billiards. The Comcast Triple Play Heartland Home is where we will be staying.
The winners will get 2,000 grand cash, 200 dollars in Shop N Save money, a meet and greet to go hang with rapper T.I. and a great new pool table from West Penn Billiards.
For us dj's, we get to give 500 dollars to our favorite charity. Mine will be The American Heart Association. Angela said that she would MATCH that if we win!
Let's hope!

100 Acres Haunted House (Melanie)
Can you believe it?
2008 is flying by in front of our eyes.
B94 is a big supporter of Halloween and we recently went through the most terrifying, but fun Haunted House in Southpark. You can see all the details on the Haunted House at our homepage. 100 Acres Haunted House in Southpark is BY FAR the scariest Haunted House I have been through in years.
It is in its 5th year and it isn't the same from years ago. They touch upon all of your fears in the house. From a fear of clowns, to claustrophobia, to blood to a maze that we got lost in for nearly 20 minutes!!
I screamed so loud. Bubba might have screamed louder than me. Buckhead was pretty calm. Intern Beaker was pretty freaked out.
The whole group that went with us was amazed at how great it was.
So, check it out. It is open until November 1st.

It was at the 2nd annual Westmoreland County Penn Township Fall Festival.
Buckhead and Bubba (and me too) want to thank everyone for coming out to watch the game and support us. Here are some pictures!

Pink And Softball
It will be held at Bubba's UGLY Northshore Bar and Grille.
Ladies..I need you out there to support me with those pink or pastel jerseys! We have some great stuff planned. Plus, Maniac Magazine will be there doing a LIVE Steeler themed fashion show. The Village Idiots will be there and you can play their famous WHACK AN IDIOT game!
See you all there!
More fun happens this Saturday, September 20th for B94 and Westmoreland County! We are taking part in the 2nd annual Penn Township Fall Festival with the FIRST ever Celebrity Softball game.

Sink The Pink...OR LOYAL (Melanie)
Buckhead and Bubba are ALL over me about wearing a peach colored Ben Steeler jersey to the first home game. I know..I know...ONLY bleed Black and Gold and wear Black and Gold. But, in my defense, does it matter? Loyal ties to my team with ANY color right? That is how I feel.
As a female...I'm a bit girly girl and I like the peach jersey. Nothing against the true colors of the best team in the NFL, but regardless of what color I wear..I'm a true fan.
The guys are thinking of doing something BIG with this. Something like gathering at a place and having everyone turn in their pink shirts for black and gold shirts.
Or..how about this? Everyone that supports me wearing the pink...come that day and wear their colored shirts?
Keep listening all this week and next week. I have a good feeling they aren't done abusing me and that their minds are working on something big here!

What Is In It For Me? (Melanie)
I do know..that I was really really good at Ms. Pac-man, Pac-man and Kaboom from the days of Atari. I loved it. I will still kick butt on any of those three games.
The years of progression have frightened me. There was Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation 1 2 and 3. It all gets confusing to me.
Then..they came out with Nintendo wii. Wow right? Nope. I fought this in my household for awhile. My hubby wanted it as soon as it hit the stores. Well, after he accrued some bday money this past July he bought it. He had enough of my protest.
There was a condition though. How would this wii benefit me? Could I play it? Would I be able to learn all the games?
Well, then wii fit was introduced. Enough said. Yoga on a video game? Aerobics in my own house on a video game? I could do lunges and leg lifts via a video game in my pajamas in my OWN house? I can box a person who isn't near me by punching the air in front of me with my slippers on?
Bingo!
Sign me up.
So, my hubby bought me wii fit for my bday this past week.
I am 100 percent addicted. I can't stop. I actually had the computer tell me.."You should take 15 minute breaks and replenish by drinking lots of water."
We had family and friends over this weekend and turned wii fit on and was up until 1 in the morning playing the wii fit balancing games. Amazing.
I'm sold.
I'm not into the Madden 2009 or Tiger 2009 or the wii tennis or sports games...but, give me wii fit and I'm happy.

Hard At Work As Bubba Heals (Melanie)
He is now on vacation too, so another 2 weeks of rest for him and he should be all better when the three of us return August 18th.
He seems to be doing well. We have had a great number of guest hosts fill in for him and all of them so far have been just great.
His wife Tracy was SO fun. TODD from the Village Idiots has done a great job with his Test Dummy Tuesday stunts AND filling in for him. County Executive Dan Onorato was a blast. Shane Tallant from HGTV's Designed To Sell was a true comic. We had Sally Wiggin and Janelle Hall from WTAE on and both were pure sweetness. The rest of the guests this week will be Mike Clark and Sally Wiggin from WTAE and Jen Miele from WTAE. Intern Pita and Beaker are holding their own and doing well too.
We miss Bubba, and the show is NOT the same without him, but it has been refreshing and fun with the guests. They all have done so well.
Here are a few pictures of us hard at work. You will notice Buck, me, Beaker, Shane Tallant and my cousin Lisa visiting from Michigan in the majority of the pics!
Enjoy! Have a GREAT week!

New Kids With B94 & Kent
I'm actually a bit jealous of this picture of B94's Temptation Floatation winner Kent.
Do you know who he is with in the pic?
Yep..New Kids On The Block.
Kent had a GREAT time on one of his prize winnings out to see them live and hang out. I love the fact he was able to give B94 a big SHOUT out with that sign. Way to go Kent!
I wish I was there. Kent enjoyed it, but I'm sure I would have A LOT more. Ha Ha... They all look really good and I heard the performance was awesome.

Temptation Congrats
Congratulations!!
It was a great week of weather, fun and contest sillies at Sandcastle.
Here is a picture of some of the contestants at Sandcastle with Buckhead this past Saturday night at Sandbar. Chuck, Marissa and Kent are in the pic.

Temptation Floatation (Melanie)
Temptation Floatation kicked off today at Sandcastle water park in Homestead in the Tsunami portion of the park. We call them our "Temptation Five." We have Beth, Kent, Chuck, Aaliyah and Marissa. We will see who gets voted off the first day starting tomorrow. The challenges start with the Marines on Tuesday July 15th and YOU the listener can begin voting them off at www.b94.com.
You can also view the web cams there also at our B94 site.
I don't think I could live for five days on a raft with strangers with limited food, water and bathroom breaks. No showering..no interaction with my hubby or daughter...no cell phones or computers..no interaction with friends and family. UGH!
No way!
Make sure you listen all this week to hear the DRAMA.
It will be DRAMA too!

Nelly Furtado (Melanie)
So much has happened since I've last blogged with Buckhead and Bubba on B94.
We crowned the BEST PIZZA IN PITTSBURGH contest winner to Tierno's Pizzeria in Plum.
Northside winner was Mandy's. South winner was Giovanni's. West winner was Gianni's.
The judges that day were amazing. Dan Onorato, Jon Burton from WTAE, C-Love from PMZ My Pittsburgh TV and listener Dominic.
Bubba went to a wedding and had a blast. Buckhead is eagerly awaiting his Mom's first visit to Pittsburgh. Pita and Beaker the interns are hanging in and doing well with their Intern Show they tape and put online every Friday. In fact..Beaker has another NEW song on You Tube. He is just blazing hot now!
I was asked by a listener in an email (the name was Di) to explain the whole Nelly Furtado kiss that the guys talk about happened with her and I sometimes on the show.
Years ago when I was working at B94 doing what is now "Coop's show," I was at a B94 concert of hers at a Station Square bar. It was when "I'm Like A Bird" was a new hit and Nelly was up and coming as a great new artist.
I told my boss Ryan, that I thought she was such an attractive female and I wanted to give her a peck when I met her! I wanted to kiss her cheek instead of just shaking her hand. I was going to prove to them all I wouldn't be shy. Well, little did I know that my boss told Nelly about this and as she came to meet me and shake my hand..SHE went in to give me a "nice to meet you" peck and I did the same. I didn't know she was told to "secretively" turn her cheek, so I'd kiss her on the lips.
Yep.
I was set up and SO embarrassed. Imagine..a beautiful new female singer and I was the brunt of a joke meeting her for the first time.
Great.
So, that is how everyone knows that "I kissed Nelly Furtado."
The story isn't as interesting as you thought huh?
Get your mind out of the gutters!! My husband is good enough for me!
I'm still a huge Nelly Furtado fan till this day.
Happy Fourth Of July week!

Rocco Mediate I'm Not (Melanie)
I've been wanting to learn how to golf since I received clubs last year from my husband as a gift. Since it is almost July and I have NOT went golfing with him once, today was the DAY!
My folks watched our little one and we had a morning "date" on the course.
I did as good as I could for the first time out. This is a sport that needs tons and tons of practice and time. That is something, unfortunately, I don't have....lots of time.
I have such respect for golfers now....more than before. My Dad and hubby play together a lot and I can see how fun it can be and how amazingly addicting it could become.
I do know that I don't think I hurt or injured anything (animal or human) today on the course. I lost tons of balls in the water. I learned you can take balls that aren't yours if you find them. I learned that my shoes I bought LOOK SO CUTE. I learned how fun it is to spend one on one alone time learning something with your significant other. I learned golf terminology. I learned that I wish I could drive a cart to work instead of my car...they are so cool!
I could go on and on. I hope I can start playing here and there and learn more of the game.
I gotta tell Buck and Bubba tomorrow what the man working at the golf course said today. When I asked him what a good time was to come to the course for it to not be so crowded....his response was.."Well, honey,...since the US OPEN..this course is packed..cause everyone thinks they can be Tiger or Rocco now."

Raising Awareness (Melanie)
It was a pleasure to see so many people at Tusca on the SouthSide June 13th for the WHITE PARTY that Maniac Magazine threw...there 4th annual!!! All the proceeds went to multiple sclerosis.
Even if you don't have a lot of money to go to these events..or when you get there you don't have a lot of money to give to the research...just being there sometimes shows support to the masses.
I learned in 15 minutes more about MS than I ever thought I would from the guest speaker.
Learning is key.
This coming Saturday I was asked to help emcee an event in my hometown of Monessen. The Relay for Life Walk for the American Cancer Society. All of us know someone that was diagnosed with cancer.
Learning, supporting and educating is what it is all about.
Since I have a heart condition..the American Heart Association is KEY for me.
What is yours?
Before I end the quick blog and try to hit the sack for bed...I wanted to tell you all to have a GREAT week and to look at the silly picture that Intern Beaker from the morning show and I took. Then...since it was a "girls night out"..me and my "girls" are in the next one! Jen, Jodie, Tiff and I had a blast!
June 11, 2008
Maniac Time (Melanie)
All proceeds for the event go to multiple sclerosis. You can go to maniacmagazine.com for more info and ticket prices.
Doors do open at 7pm and there is a fashion show at 8pm and an after party.
Me and the girls are going down early to do dinner.
I'm not sure if Buck and Bubba are coming down.
Trying to find ALL white was hard enough for me as a female, so I'm assuming it will be tougher for the guys.
But, I know you Pittsburgh men will look GOOD.
Try to head to the SouthSide this Friday night!
June 6, 2008
Pens (Melanie)
We love you.
I'm heading out to shake hands today at the McDonald's on Constitution Boulevard in Beaver from 12-2pm. Stop out and say hello and win some great B94 prizes.
According to Buckhead and Bubba..I will be SWEATING outside at my remote today since it is going to be so hot!
I'll sweat nicely..I promise.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the most beautiful weather we've had in awhile.
If you are heading out to PNC park for any baseball games this weekend....GO BUCS!

So, this is what our piggy banks look like since GAS is 100 million dollars a gallon.
Ok..not that much, but almost 4 bucks!
Thanks to B94 and our wonderful promotions department for this great new giveaway everyday in the 7am, 12 noon and 5pm hours!
Listen to play FUEL OR NO FUEL. You can bargain to win a Sheetz gas card....up to ONE grand! Sheetz has really hooked us up, so make sure you tune in.
We kicked off the big giveaway today with Buckhead and Bubba in the morning.
The skinny piggy bank photo comes from an email forward from my cousin Debbie. Funny huh?
Thanks to Channel 4 anchor Andrew Stockey for coming on air with us this morning to discuss politics and to Channel 2 reporter Alison Morris for coming on air to talk about the Pens tonight and the big WHITE OUT.
GO PENS!!

Pens...You Make Us Proud (Melanie)
I'm hoping this picture of us in the B94 studio can mean something more than just us being able to have the Lord Stanley stop by last Friday. I'm hoping this cup comes back to Pittsburgh in 2008.
You gotta have the faith! If you are a true Pittsburgher you are upset about the Pens being down 3-1. You might even be a fair weathered fan. Admit it. We all are at some point in this city.
Tonight is game five of the Stanley Cup Finals. We have a tough game ahead in Detroit.
I won't blog about knowing a lot about hockey, because I don't. But, I will say that I know that we HAVE to win tonight...or else..this is over.
Let's Go Pens!
June 1, 2008
Sex And The City (Melanie)
I'm admitting that I absolutely adore Sex And The City. I watched all six seasons faithfully and actually got my husband to watch them all with me too.
He might not admit how much he loved the shows (that is a whole other blog) but deep down I know he does.
So, I went to see SATC with the big B94 premiere on May 27th. As Miley Cyrus says.."it was a GNO..GIRLS NIGHT OUT."
Well, in about 30 minutes me and the man are going to see it AGAIN.
I've talked him into taking me to dinner and watching it with me.
I know it won't disappoint the second time either.
This weekend I was in a wedding...saw my niece's dance recital, grocery shopped, did laundry and yard work..went to church and it is a NICE way to spend a lazy late Sunday afternoon.
I'm still upset about the Pens, so I know Miranda, Carrie, Charlotte and Samantha can cure that.
Plus, they will make my husband forget about the loss of the Pens with how good they all look in the movie.
You sacrifice in a marriage right?
Okay..so maybe I'll owe him after today!

Penguins And BEAKER (Melanie)
They did a road trip and brought me and my hubby and Red Wing hat and shirt. I will
never wear it. I'll have to clean with it. Ha!
My friends and family were good sports to them, but it sucked when the Pens lost 4-0.
The room kinda got quiet, but that only lasted about 15 minutes...because the drinks were still flowing and the food was still there!
Here are some pics of them with Buckhead and his beautiful fiance Ali.
Lisa and Troy were so much fun and they know the Red Wings will not be the Stanley Cup champs. They just can't admit it.
I guarantee Lisa will call in and harass The Buckhead and Bubba morning show Tuesday...UNLESS the Pens win tonight. Which they will. Revenge is sweet.
Here is me and Buckhead! Good pic huh?
Later in the night...one of our morning show interns showed up with his girl!
Poor Beaker got ABUSED by my girlfriends when he said something to the affect that ..."Women are just stupid and don't get it."
Here is a pic of the girls ganging up on him!
Can you see his face and how it was hung in shame as each of them where up in his face yelling at him?
Lisa, Elaine and Carla straightened him out!
I'm glad I didn't hear the conversation...I would have been one of the women setting him straight too! Poor Beak.
